MOSCOW, Idaho – Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge N. Randy Smith will give the commencement address for the University of Idaho's College of Law commencement.
The College of Law, the university's only First Professional degree program, will hold its graduation and celebration Saturday, May 16, beginning at 3 p.m. in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center, 1000 Stadium Way in Moscow.
Smith's distinguished legal career began in Idaho with the J.R. Simplot Company. He also served 13 years – nine as partner – with Merrill & Merrill, a Pocatello law firm. In 1995, he was elected district judge for Idaho's Sixth Judicial District. Smith was nominated by President George W. Bush to fill an Idaho vacancy on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in February 2007; the court hears appeals from the federal district courts of Alaska, Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Smith lives and maintains chambers in Pocatello.
At the ceremony, the College of Law will honor Stephen Hanks, class of 1978, with the Faculty Award of Legal Merit. This award recognizes an Idaho law graduate whose career exemplifies the best in the legal profession based on demonstrated standards of integrity, competence, service and leadership through work as a legal practitioner, service to the legal profession or service to the community.
Hanks is the director of Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the former president of the Washington Division of URS Corporation, and a former member of the Board of Directors of URS Corporation, a design, engineering, construction and management solutions company headquartered in San Francisco, Calif. He previously served as the president, chief executive officer, and a member of the Board of Directors of Washington Group International Inc., a design, engineering, construction and management solutions company that merged with URS Corporation in 2007. He was named president of the company in April 2000 and a member of the Board of Directors and chief executive officer in June 2001.
Law degree candidates will meet, dressed in regalia, on the front steps of the Menard Law Building at 2:15 p.m. for a class photo.
