Wednesday, April 28 2004
April 28, 2004^BOISE - Approximately 135 candidates may be conferred degrees at the University of Idaho-Boise ninth Commencement Ceremony set for 3 p.m., Saturday, May 8, at the Boise Centre on the Grove.^UI Boise enrolls approximately 2,700 students annually in graduate and professional courses and programs in agriculture, architecture, education, engineering, and law. ^Commencement speaker will be Carolyn Terteling-Payne, who also will receive the President's Medallion. The interim Boise mayor and Idaho native has spent her life making Boise a better place. Her civic commitment has included the public library, art museum, historic preservation, performing arts, Junior League, Idaho Law Foundation, zoological society, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and the Warm Springs Counseling Center, among others.^Another President's Medallion will be awarded posthumously to the late Robert H. LeBow of Nampa. The former medical director at Terry Reilly Health Services, a low-income clinic, dedicated his career to serving uninsured and under-served people in southern Idaho and beyond through Peace Corps missions.^Also to be recognized are UI Interim President Gary Michael, who will receive UI's highest honor, the UI Alumni Association Distinguished Idahoan Award, and James Hawkins, who will be inducted into the UI Alumni Hall of Fame May 14. ^The Distinguished Idahoan Award recognizes one who has achieved a national reputation and has rendered extraordinary service to the state. It goes to a limited number of people, such as Michael, who has served UI as its interim president since July at the request of the governor and the State Board of Education. He put aside his retirement and fulfilled his duties without pay. The former CEO of Albertson, Inc. has been promoting excellence in education through private fund raising and industry partnering for years. His recent hands-on exercise in leadership also required tough problem-solving and high ethical decision-making.^Hall of Fame inductee Hawkins, a Boisean formerly from Coeur d'Alene and a 1959 graduate from UI's College of Business and Economics, is a partner in a venture capital company based in Idaho. Prior, he directed the Idaho Department of Commerce. His UI involvement includes serving as president of the foundation, advising the business college, and receiving the Alumni Association Silver and Gold Award.^Inspiring student graduates include two assistant superintendents for the Meridian School District who earned doctoral degrees in education. Janet Marie Horning's dissertation was "Inside an Alternative Middle School: Student Perspectives;" Bruce Wayne Gestrin's was "A Case Study of Sunami Professional Technical Charter School." Pam Twilegar earned a master's in adult and organizational learning after six years of part-time study and full-time mothering to 10-year-old twin boys. She works for Hewlett-Packard in Boise, as a training program manager, and formerly was a school teacher.
