Performers at 2001 UI Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival Announced—Tickets Now on Sale

Dec. 13, 2000^MOSCOW— Lionel Hampton and his New York Big Band, Nancy Wilson, Lou Rawls, the Ray Brown Trio, the Roy Hargrove Quintet and Clark Terry are just a few of the performers lined up for the 34th annual University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The festival runs Feb. 21-24 on the UI campus.^ More than 40 jazz artists are scheduled to participate in the four-day festival, which includes concerts, clinics and student competitions. ^ “Each concert features a star-studded lineup with some big names, some new young artists and a mixture of jazz styles,” said Lynn J. Skinner, jazz festival director.^ Tickets to the festival are now on sale through the UI Ticket Office at (208) 885-7212 or 1-88-88-U-IDAHO, and G&B Select-a-Seat outlets. Tickets range in price from $18 to $28.^Some of the artists making their first visit to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival include vocalists Kevin Mahogany, who has recorded with the Ray Brown Trio on the CD “Some of My Best Friends are Singers,” and 22-year-old Jane Monheit, who has released the CD, “Never Never Land.” Also new to the festival is the all-woman jazz quintet, Five Play, whose members also perform in the 15-piece Diva band, trumpeter Valery Ponomarev and pianist and Northwest jazz legend Walt Wagner.^ Artists making return visits to the festival include saxophonists Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano and Lembit Saarsulu, French horn player Arkady Shilkloper, trumpeter Clark Terry and pianist Leonid Vintskevich.^^The lineups for the four evening jazz concerts in the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center are:^Pepsi International Jazz Concert, Wednesday, Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m.^Lionel Hampton, vibes; Nancy Wilson, vocals; Hank Jones, piano; Christian McBride, bass; Russell Malone, guitar; Ben Riley, drums; Kevin Mahogany, vocals; Paquito D’Rivera, saxophone; Claudio Roditi, trumpet; Jane Jarvis, piano; Brian Bromberg, bass; Wally “Gator” Watson, drums; Christian Fabian, bass; Kuni Mikami, piano; Arkady Shilkloper, French horn; Leonid Vintskevich, piano; Lembit Saarsalu, saxophone; Walt Wagner, piano; Jim Martinez, piano; Billy Contreras, violin; and John Stowell, guitar.^Northwest Airlines Special Guest Concert, Thursday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.^Lionel Hampton, vibes; Hank Jones, piano; Christian McBride, bass; Russell Malone, guitar; Ben Riley, drums; Roy Hargrove Quintet; Herb Ellis, guitar; Ray Brown Trio; Joe Lovano, saxophone; Jane Monheit, vocals; Igor Butman, saxophone; Dee Daniels, vocals; Five Play; and Valery Ponomarev, trumpet.^Ford All-Star Concert, Friday, Feb. 23, 8 p.m.^Lionel Hampton, vibes; Lou Rawls, vocals; Clark Terry, trumpet; Benny Golson, saxophone; Hank Jones, piano; Christian McBride, bass; Russell Malone, guitar; Ben Riley, drums; Ethel Ennis, vocals; Bill Watrous, trombone; Carl Fontana, trombone and Benny Powell, trombone.^Avista Giants of Jazz Concert, Saturday, Feb. 24, 8 p.m.^Lionel Hampton and his New York Big Band; Hank Jones, piano; Christian McBride, bass; Russell Malone, guitar; Ben Riley, drums; Carla Cook, vocals; Pete Candoli, trumpet; Conte Candoli, trumpet; and Brian Bromberg, bass.^ There also are three afternoon winners' concerts featuring student competitors and UI Lionel Hampton School of Music jazz bands and choirs.
