Retired UI Professor Jim Peek To Lead Ecology Trek Through Frank Church Wilderness May 27-31

May 16, 2002^ MOSCOW – Retired University of Idaho Professor Jim Peek is leading an ecology trek through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area Monday-Friday, May 27-31. The trip is sponsored by the UI Enrichment Program.^ Participants will study the ecology of plant communities and wildlife along the Big Creek drainage. The trek includes a 16-mile hike to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River through Bighorn sheep habitat, a golden eagle aerie and the pictographs of the Tukudekah. Participants also will examine vegetation zones; effects of wildfires on dry forest; and Bighorn sheep lambing cliffs.^ Peek, retired from the UI department of fish and wildlife resources, has 27 years of experience in the Frank Church Wilderness area, including teaching courses at the Taylor Ranch Field Campus. He is a recent recipient of the Professional Wildlifer Award from the Idaho Chapter of the Wildlife Society, and the Safari Club International Conservation Award.^ The U.S. Congress designated the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area in 1980 and it now totals about 2.4 million acres. It is the second largest unit of the National Wilderness Preservation System in the lower 48 states.^ To participate in the ecology trek, individuals must be in good-to-excellent shape for hiking. Cost is $339 per person. Only a few slots are open.
