Six UI Alumni to be Inducted into Hall of Fame

The award recognizes UI graduates who have developed nationally or internationally recognized reputations in their specialized fields. ^^2000 UI Hall of Fame inductees are:^^Jeffrey S. Ashby of Houston, Tx., is a 1976 graduate in mechanical engineering. Ashby is a captain in the U.S. Navy and has over 6,000 flight hours and 1,000 carrier landings. In July 1999, he piloted NASA’s Space Shuttle Columbia on a mission to deploy the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics observatory.^^Robert B. Cobb of Phenix City, Ala., is a 1940 graduate in business. Cobb is a decorated soldier in the U.S. Army with a distinguished career in World War II as a courageous leader. He was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit honor among his 32 military awards and citations.^^Edward Groff of Boise, is a1956 graduate in civil engineering. Groff served for 33 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was involved in the design and construction of eight of the ten Corps’ flood control and hydroelectric projects on the Columbia River and its tributaries. He retired from the Corps of Engineers in 1989 with the title of Design Branch Chief.^^Michael Kirk of Brookline, Mass., is a 1971 graduate in communication. Kirk manages his own company, Kirk Documentary Group, and has gained a national reputation in documentary television and film production. He is active with the PBS series "Frontline" and has won many national awards for broadcast journalism, including Peabody, Emmy and DuPont-Columbia awards.^^Clifford K. Schoff of Alison Park, Penn., received UI degrees in 1962 and 1964 in chemistry. Schoff is a scientist involved with the Coatings and Resins Division of PPG Industries, and active as a chemist for automotive products testing and problem solving. He is internationally recognized for contributions to polymer science in protective and decorative coatings.^^Helen Washburn of Nevada, Mo., received education degrees from UI in 1963 and 1967. Washburn is president of Cottey College, a two-year liberal arts college in Nevada, Mo. She has served as associate professor of education and dean of Graduate Studies at Albertson College of Idaho. In 1988, she was presented with the UI Silver and Gold Award, recognizing her distinguished service within higher education. ^^Induction ceremonies will take place May 12 at 6 p.m. at the University Inn-Best Western in Moscow.^^-30- jo—4/21/00 UAD^
