Student Advertising Team Wins Second in District Competition

April 27, 2007 MOSCOW, Idaho – The student advertising team from the University of Idaho won second place in the American Advertising Federation's District XI Student Advertising Competition April 20 in Portland, Ore. “I was very proud of Idaho’s competitiveness – we were right there with the best in the Northwest,” said team adviser Mark Secrist, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Media. “The judges told us that when we presented Friday morning, we set the bar for the day.” Jaron Williams, University of Idaho advertising and communication studies senior from Altadena, Calif., was honored with the best male student presenter award. “Jaron impressed the judges with his easy-going manner and his use of humor,” Secrist said. Portland State University took first in the district and will advance to the national competition June 7-9 in Lexington, Ky.The University of Oregon’s team placed third. Other teams represented were from Washington State University, Boise State University, Idaho State University, the University of Montana and Montana State University. The competition was judged by regional advertising professionals and representatives from Coca Cola, the corporate sponsor for this year’s competition. “I had an opportunity to talk at length with some of the judges and the competition was very close,” said Mike Kerby, president of c308 Marketing of Boise, who attended the conference. “It illustrates to advertising professionals that the University of Idaho has very strong advertising and marketing programs.” Kerby, a University of Idaho alumnus, was a member of the Advertising Competition Team in 1996 and 1997. Secrist described the AAF program as the premier collegiate advertising competition. He has coached teams that have won the District XI competitions in 1995, ‘96 and ‘99. University of Idaho’s Ad team placed second in the nation in 1995. More than 3,000 advertising students nationwide participated in this year’s competition. Student teams were challenged to develop a $15 million integrated advertising and marketing plan for Coca Cola Classic aimed at consumers aged 13 to 24. Before the district presentation, each team created a plans book of up to 32 pages for the judges to reviewed and score. Idaho’s team’s presentation included advertising, promotions and World Wide Web marketing strategies aimed at teens aged 13 -18. The team produced television spots, Internet and magazine advertisements, and billboard designs.
