UI Art & Architecture Dean Returns to the Classroom
Tuesday, October 10 2000
^October 10, 2000^MOSCOW – Paul Windley, dean of the University of Idaho College of Art & Architecture since 1992, announced Monday that he will be stepping down from his position to return to the classroom once a new dean is hired. A committee to conduct a national search for a new dean will be appointed as soon as possible. ^“The college has made significant progress under Paul Windley’s administration,” said Provost Brian Pitcher. “Progress with professional accreditation has been a priority of his administration. In addition, the financial health of the college was improved significantly by earning Idaho Board of Education support for a professional fee and administrative support for matching fee increases.”^Pitcher credited Windley with mobilizing the creative and operational forces of the faculty to develop a strategic plan and the vision of the college highlighting the goal of being the premier design program in the Northwest. “Dean Windley has been a strong proponent and effective strategist for development of the Boise Urban Research and Design Program, and planning for the proposed design technology center. His term as dean has been a period of maturation for the college,” Pitcher said. ^UI President Bob Hoover also commended Windley. ”Programs in the College of Art and Architecture are central to the UI’s mission,” he said, “and Paul Windley has mobilized and supported the remarkable creative work of the faculty.”^Windley said that after this eighth year, many of his goals for the college will have been realized, “including vigorous action plans, remodeled and new space opportunities for the college, recruitment of high quality faculty and staff, improved alumni relations, a fully functioning and dynamic college advisory board, and laying the groundwork for a capital campaign. This is a good time for the college to search for a new dean and for me to transition to faculty status.” ^Windley earned his bachelor’s degrees from Idaho State University and the University of Colorado, and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. ^He will be on leave from July 1 through Dec. 30, 2001, to complete several academic projects and grant proposals. Beginning Jan. 1, 2002, he will return as a full professor with tenure in the Department of Architecture where he will assume a normal teaching assignment and other related duties.
