McNichols Moot Court Competition last month in the Law School Courtroom.^^The competition requires participants to write an appellate brief on a problem provided to them in the fall and orally argue the merits of the case in the spring. The problem this year involved a father's right to establish a relationship with his illegitimate child versus the mother's ability to give the child up for adoption.^^The competition began with 26 second-year UI students preparing briefs. Following preliminary oral arguments, the competitors were reduced to eight and they went on to compete in the quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds.^^The finalists argued their briefs before a distinguished panel of UI College of Law alumni including U.S. District Court Judge Edward Lodge ('61), U.S. Magistrate Judge Mikel Williams ('69), Idaho Supreme Court Justice Wayne Kidwell ('64), Idaho Court of Appeals Judge Darrel Perry ('79) and Lewiston Attorney Mike McNichols ('63).^^The annual competition is named in honor of the late Raymond C. McNichols, U.S. District Judge for the District of Idaho. Judge McNichols was a highly respected jurist and a distinguished alumnus of the UI College of Law. ^^The semi-finalists, finalists and winner of the 2000 McNichols Moot Court Competition were:^^Semi-finalists:^^BOISE Heather English^^SODA SPRINGS Airon Shuler^^REXBURG Jefferson West^^POCATELLO James Ruchti^^RIGBY Troy Evans^^MCCALL Sheli Fulcher-Koontz^^LIBERTY LAKE, WA Johnathan Volyn^^YAKIMA, WA Amy Gagnier^^Finalists:^^POCATELLO James Ruchti^^SODA SPRINGS Airon Shuler^^Winner:^^POCATELLO James Ruchti^^Best Brief:^^RIGBY Troy Evans^^Best Oralist:^^BOISE Heather English^^--30-- cc-3/2/00 LAW^
