UI's Ron Sheffield to be Honored by Dairy Industry

Jan. 24, 2005 TWIN FALLS -- Ron Sheffield, waste management specialist at the University of Idaho’s Twin Falls research and extension center, has been selected for the 2005 Western Dairy Business Outstanding Educational Support Award. Sheffield, assistant professor in UI's biological and agricultural engineering program and extension waste management engineer, will receive the award at the World Ag Expo in Tulare, Calif. Feb.10, when he will make a presentation on, Dairy Business Outstanding Educational Support and Research. The World Ag Expo is the international dairy industry’s gathering of producers, processors and service providers. Sheffield, who came to the UI in March 2002, helps farmers, ranchers, stock breeders, dairy farmers and others find ways to control odors through such technologies as digesters, lagoon-feed additives and covers, ozonation and separation systems and better handling of manure and application. He has organized numerous workshops and public information session about animal and food-processing waste management and odor control. His latest publication, "Odor Assessments of Idaho Livestock Farms and Manure Application Practices," has been in demand and is available through the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station or via www.agls.uidaho.edu/bae/sheffield.htm Ron Goble, associate publisher and editor of Western Dairy Business, noted sheffield’s many outstanding contributions to the dairy industry over the years, "and his strong leadership in developing educational and environmental problem-solving for Idaho's dairy industry.” “This award from Western Dairy Business is a deserved recognition of Ron Sheffield's hard work in increasing educational resources for the dairy trade,” said Jon Van Gerpen, department head of biological and agricultural engineering at UI.
