April 14, 2006 MOSCOW, Idaho – Following is a list of University of Idaho sponsored events for the week of April 24-30. Events will take place in Moscow, Boise and Idaho Falls. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Tuesday, April 25 Dissertation Defense 9 a.m. College of Education Room 301 Hsiu-I Hsu defends “The Effects of Motivation on Taiwanese College Students’ English Listening Comprehension.” Dissertation Defense 2 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) University of Idaho at Idaho Falls, 1776 Science Center Dr., Idaho Falls Guy M. Hollingsworth defends “A Fragile Life: The Epic of Multiple Kidney Transplant Recipient.” Foreign Film 7 and 9:30 p.m. Student Union Building Borah Theater “Tony Takitani.” Japanese film with English subtitles. Wednesday, April 26 Dissertation Defense 10 a.m. College of Education Room 301 Ai-Ying Ying defends “Invigorating Pedagogical Change with the Phenomenographic Approach: A Case Study in Teaching English for Specified Purposes.” Thursday, April 27 Dissertation Defense 1 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) University of Idaho at Idaho Falls, 1776 Science Center Dr., Idaho Falls Jack Aaron Harrell defends “The Adult Creative Writer: A Phenomenological Study.” Dissertation Defense 1 p.m. Life Science Building Room 163 Darin Rokyta defends “Natural Diversity and Experimental Adaptive Evolution of Bacteriophages of the Family Microviridae.” Louis Fisher Lecture 7 p.m. UI College of Law Courtroom Louis Fisher, specialist in the separation of powers for the Congressional Research Service, works at the Law Library at the Library of Congress and will address the issue of expansion of presidential power through military tribunals. Opera Scenes 8 p.m. Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and are only available at the door. Friday, April 28 University of Idaho Engineering Design Expo 2006 Kibbie – ASUI Activity Center and Student Union Building “Global Engineering” is the theme for this year’s Expo featuring global energy and robotics in action. The event is a showcase of student research and achievements in engineering, computer science, environmental science and related technical disciplines. Dissertation Defense 10 a.m. College of Education Room 301 Ching-Yi Chen defends “The Work and School Conflict: Perceptions of Vocational Technical Working Student and Their Coping Strategies.” Interdisciplinary Presentation 1:30 p.m. Student Union Building Borah Theater Leonard Bond, of Idaho National Laboratories Center for Advanced Energy Studies, presents “Global Energy Consumption, Needs, Challenges and Research.” Dissertation Defense 2:30 p.m. Engineering Physics Building Yongtao Guan defends "Algorithms and Computational Methods in Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies: Interacting Particle Systems, Phylogenetic Distance Methods, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo." Dissertation Defense 3 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) University of Idaho at Idaho Falls, 1776 Science Center Dr., Idaho Falls Reese Nelson defends “Mitigating stress in college students by enhancing testing center environments through passive interaction with plants.” Experimental Music Concert 8 p.m. Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall Students perform their interest in experimental music. Saturday, April 29 Graduate Student Recital 1 p.m. Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall Elizabeth Tailleur performs on the piano. Vandaleers Reunion Concert 8 p.m. Administration Building Auditorium Concert featuring alumni of the University of Idaho concert choir, which performs classical music of all eras and genres. The choir is known for its traveling success and tours the northwest each year. Sunday, April 30 Student Recital Noon Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall Kevin Kovalchick percussion performance.
