Feb. 8, 2008 MOSCOW, Idaho – The following is a list of University of Idaho-sponsored events for the week of Feb. 18-24. Events will take place in Moscow, Boise and Spokane, Wash., and are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Tuesday, Feb. 19 Donuts and Discussion with President Tim White Noon Teaching and Learning Center, Room 229 University of Idaho President Tim White will discuss diversity on campus. Jazz Festival Kick-Off 5:30-7:30 p.m. In front of Ross in the Palouse Mall The University of Idaho welcomes Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival guests and the community to join in a kick-off celebration of the 2008 festival. This event will celebrate Lionel Hampton’s 100th birthday. Cake and refreshments will be provided. National Society of Black Engineers Guest Speaker 6 p.m. University Inn-Best Western 1516 Pullman Rd. in Moscow Philip Emeagwali, Gordon Bell Award Winner, will speak on the topic “Obstacles Faced by Developing Minority Engineers – Career and Education.” General admission is $12 and $10 for students. Hamp’s Gala 7:30 p.m. University Auditorium in the Administration Building Six outstanding students from the Lionel Hampton School of Music will be honored for their student involvement in the festival and musical talent, and will perform a concert for the gala. Honorees include: Kristian Bucy, vocals; Ashley Easton, piano; Brendan Johnson, guitar; Jenny Kellogg, trombone; Bray Wilkins, vocals; and Josiah Stocker, piano. Eat lunch with Vandal coaches and staff, and hear the latest athletic information at a weekly luncheon in Spokane. The Vandal Scholarship Fund and Vandal Athletics invite alumni and friends to interact with other Vandals, watch sports highlights, and enter to win raffles and prizes. For more information, contact the Vandal Scholarship Fund at (208) 334-2087. 17th Annual High School Art Exhibition 4-6 p.m. Ridenbaugh Hall on the corner of Blake Avenue and Nez Perce Drive The University of Idaho Idaho’s Department of Art and Design will give high school students from around the state to show off their creativity, inspiration and interest in science and art. This show is open to students in ninth to 12th grades; entry deadline is Monday, Feb. 11. Featured artists include: Aaron Weinstein, violin; All-Star Rhythm Section: Jeff Hamilton, drums; Russell Malone, guitar; Robert Hurst, bass and Bill Charlap, piano; Wycliffe Gordon with All-Star Rhythm Selection; “Lionel, Red and Bunny”: Ed Polcer, Wycliffe Gordon and Houston Person; and John Clayton. Thursday, Feb. 21 Dissertation Defense 8 a.m. Renfrew Hall Room 127 James N. Benardini III will defend his dissertation, “Microbiology of Aquatic Environments: Characterizations of the Microbiotas of Municipal Water Supplies, the International Space Station…” Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival: Hamp the Innovator and Showman—Presented by Horizon Air 7:30 p.m. ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center This concert will feature some of the freshest sounds of today’s jazz, while showing off the music’s traditional roots. Featured artists include: All Start Rhythm Section with saxophone rising starts; Regina Carter, violin; Roberta Gambarini, vocals; and Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor. Artists include: Atsuko Hashimoto, Hammond B3 organ; Jeff Hamilton, drums; Red Holloway, sax; Dee Daniels with Sara Gazarek, vocals; Curtis Fuller with Ryan Porter and Ismael Cuevas, trombone; Hank Jones with Gerald Clayton and Taylor Eigsti, piano; Bobby Hutcherson with Warren Wolf, vibes; and Jon Hendricks with Sachal Vasandani, vocals.
