April 21, 2006 MOSCOW, Idaho – Following is a list of University of Idaho sponsored events for the week of May 1-7. Events will take place in Moscow, Boise and Idaho Falls. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Monday, May 1 Immigration Teach-In 9 a.m. St. Augustine’s Church The Office of Multicultural Affairs along with student groups UNITY and M.E.Ch.A (met-cha) will host a teach-in followed by a peace march for immigrant rights. The teach-in will feature Sam Byrd, founder of the Center for Justice and Community and UI faculty Debbie Storrs, Liz Brandt, and Monica Schurtman. Front St., Boise Steven Phillips defends, “A Comparative Analysis of Student Absenteeism and Mathematics Achievement Between Hispanic and Caucasian Students.” UI Staff Awards Reception 1:30 p.m. Student Union Building Ballroom The reception will honor the Outstanding Employee recipients as well as the Lawrence McBride Prize winner, the new Outstanding Team Award recipients and the Staff Educational Award winners. University employees will be honored for their dedication and longevity with the institution and new retirees also will be recognized. Dissertation Defense 1:30 p.m. Engineering-Physics Building Room 413 Chunchang Tao defends “Integrated Enzymatic Processing of HEA Vegetable Oils for Erucic Acid Isolation and Biodiesel Production: Process Investigation and a New Bi-Level Kinetic Model for Solvent-Free Vegetable Oil Hydrolysis by Water-Soluble Lipase.” Moscow Kino Student Digital Media Festival 7 p.m. Student Union Building Borah Theater Presentation of thesis projects of television, documentary and narrative cinema by UI journalism and mass media students. Tuesday, May 2 Dissertation Defense 8 a.m. College of Education Room 301 John Michael Bundy defends, “Examination of Decision-Making Factors in Student Discipline by Idaho Secondary Principals.” Dissertation Defense 1 p.m. College of Natural Resources Jennifer Farnum defends "Investigating Customer Judgments within a Tourism-based Industry: The Case of Commercial Whitewater Rafting.” Graduate Student Recital 8 p.m. Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall Russell Richardson performs on the tuba. Wednesday, May 3 Dissertation Defense Noon (Mountain Standard Time) University of Idaho at Idaho Falls, 1776 Science Center Dr., Idaho Falls Darren Furman defends “Si’Se Puede: A Collective Case Study Utilizing an Interpretative Biographical Approach of How Three Mexican Americans were Successful in Their Educations.” Commencement - UI Idaho Falls 7:30 p.m. Willard Arts Center Colonial Theater, 450 A St., Idaho Falls University of Idaho at Idaho Falls Commencement Ceremony. Thursday, May 4 Dissertation Defense 9 a.m. Renfrew Building Room 127 Kim Pepin defends “Pleitropy, Epistasis, and Clonal Interference in Bacteriophage PhiX174.” Plant Sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Idaho Commons Courtyard and at the Sixth Street Greenhouses University of Idaho Plant and Soil Science Club to host its annual plant sale. Dissertation Defense 2 p.m. College of Education Room 301 Karl Allen Kitchel defends, “An Examination of the Impact of Idaho’s Technology Assessment Process.” University of Idaho Cinco de Mayo Celebration 7 p.m. Student Union Building Ballroom The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosts the celebration including: a fashion show, informational tables, piñatas, a Little Miss Cinco de Mayo contest, Miss Cinco de Mayo contest and performances by Sabor de la Raza and “Yo Soy Joaquin.” The celebration also will include a DJ’d dance from 9 p.m. to midnight. Jazz Concert 7:30 p.m. Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall University of Idaho Jazz Band and Choir performance.
