University of Idaho Ranked Among Top 13 “Wired” Universities in U.S.

Monday, April 17 2000

April 17, 2000^^CONTACT: Glenn Wilde, associate provost for Outreach and Technology, (208) 882-4905, gwilde@uidaho.edu, or Kathy Barnard, (208) 885-6291, kbarnard@uidaho.edu^^Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has released its new list of America’s 100 Most Wired Colleges 2000, and for the second year in a row the University of Idaho was ranked among the top 13 "most wired" universities in the country.^^The UI ranked 8th among public universities and 3rd in the West – with an overall score of 86.23. Carnegie Mellon University took the top slot with a score of 89.15. Other schools in the top 13 included Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dartmouth, Rensselaer Polytechnic, UCLA, Penn State University and Washington State University. ^^UI ranked higher than many better known schools such as Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Iowa State University, Rutgers, New York University and Northwestern. It is the only Idaho school included on the list.^^"This year’s ranking is especially gratifying when you look at the increasingly competitive character of this new university measure and the importance attached to the Yahoo! Survey by most American universities," said UI President Bob Hoover. "Our ability to hold our own despite the increased commitment of other universities to grow the high-tech character of their campuses reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to integrate state-of-the-art technology into all aspects of living and learning for our students, faculty and staff." ^^In all, 1,300 institutions participated in this year’s survey, four times as many as last year. ^^Hoover attributed much of the UI’s progress on the technology front to strong industry partnerships with Cisco Systems, SCT, Campus Pipeline, Hewlett-Packard, Micron and others as well as the work of staff, faculty and students. He also indicated that "in two critical measures – state dollar support per student and endowment dollar support per student – the UI ranks at the bottom of the list for these same universities and thus our accomplishment is even more significant. We use our limited resources very effectively."^^Last year, the UI ranked 13th overall and fifth among public universities. Criteria for the survey include on-line student services, "port-per-pillow" or the number of data ports per residence hall space, on-line class offerings and network connectivity.^^-30- krb—4/14/00TEC==^
