University of Idaho Selects 2004 Alumni Hall of Fame Recipients

Feb. 6, 2004^MOSCOW -- The University of Idaho Alumni Association has named four distinguished alumni to be inducted into the 2004 UI Hall of Fame.^Created in 1962, the Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes UI graduates who have achieved national or international distinction through their accomplishments and leadership.^"The university is proud of these alumni. Indeed, they are leaders in their profession on a national and international scale," said UI Interim President Gary Michael.^UI Alumni Hall of Fame inductees for 2004 are: ^James V. Hawkins of Boise, a 1959 graduate from the College of Business and Economics. Hawkins is a partner in Highway 12 Ventures, a venture capital company based in Idaho. Before entering the private sector, Hawkins was the director of the Idaho Department of Commerce. He is the current president of the UI Foundation. He also is member and past president of the College of Business and Economics advisory board at the university. He received an honorary doctorate in administrative sciences from UI in 1996. He also received a UI Alumni Association Silver and Gold Award that same year. Hawkins was born and raised in Coeur d'Alene. ^Reginald Reeves of Ketchum and Idaho Falls, a 1952 graduate from the College of Law. He practices law in Idaho Falls and lives in Ketchum, working as an ardent volunteer while demonstrating his philanthropic character. On a weekly basis, the retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel locates food, books, medicine and computers for those less-fortunate. He also arranges free air flights for cancer patients. Reeves has been appointed to countless state and national leadership and service committees, including the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities national board of directors and the National Parks and Conservation Association council of advisers. In 2002, he received the Idaho Governor's Brightest Start Award for Public Service, given to individuals who work to improve the lives of children. Reeves has received two prestigious military awards, including the Commander´s Award for Public Service and the Civilian Service Award. ^Robert G. Cowan of Richland, Wash., a 1959 graduate from the College of Business and Economics. Nearly 30 years ago, he established Robert Cowan and Associates, a general management firm providing consulting services to food processors and distributors. He is a former president of Lamb-Weston, Inc., and the Martin-Brower Companies from 1973-77. Early in his career, he worked for the accounting firm of Touche, Ross, Bailey and Smart based in Portland, Ore. He is a member of the College of Business and Economics advisory board and worked on the college's J. A. Albertson Building campaign. According to Mark Rowe of Lamb-Weston, Inc., "When you ask people what they remember most about Bob in our industry, two words are most mentioned -- passion and brilliant." ^Albert W. Franzmann of Soldotna, Alaska, a 1971 graduate from the College of Natural Resources with a Doctor of Philosophy in forest science. In the late '60s and early '70s, Franzmann conducted research at UI in the areas of environmental physiology and ecology of bighorn sheep in the Rocky Mountains. After his research stint on the Palouse, he became a wildlife research biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, director of the Kenai Moose Research Center and a professor of wildlife management at the University of Alaska. He is a founding member of the North American Moose Foundation. Franzmann is a member of numerous professional and support organizations along with business and community activities. In 2001, he received the Lifetime Conservationist Award from the Kenai Peninsula Chapter of the Safari Club International. He also has a residence in Green Valley, Ariz. ^The Alumni Hall of Fame recipients will visit the Moscow campus May 13-15 for spring Commencement activities. The induction ceremony will take place during a private ceremony May 13. Inductees also will be recognized during the UI Commencement ceremony May 15.
