Bellwood Lecture Thursday, Sept. 7, at 4:30 p.m., in the University of Idaho Student Union Building Ballroom. A public reception will be held following the event. ^^Southern Idaho residents can view a telecast of the lecture at the Idaho State Bar Building in Boise and at University Place in Idaho Falls. ^^Justice Scalia, who’s lecture is entitled "Constitutional Interpretation," is a noted proponent of textualism, the view that the judicial interpretation of laws should be guided by the intent of legislators as expressed in the text of laws. He wrote "A Matter of Interpretation," published in 1997 by the Princeton University Press. Scalia also has completed numerous law review articles and essays dealing with judicial interpretation of laws and the role of the justice system. ^^Scalia received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University in 1957. Three years later, he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he became note editor of the Harvard Law Review. During the Gerald Ford administration, he served as assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed the former law professor to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Just four years later, he was nominated to fill a Supreme Court vacancy, and the Senate confirmed his nomination 98-0. ^^Past Bellwood lecturers include Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman named to the U.S. Supreme Court, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, David Halberstam. ^^The late Sherman J. Bellwood graduated from UI with honors in 1939. In the early ‘60s he served as an Idaho District Supreme Court Judge until his retirement in 1981. Judge Bellwood endowed the Sherman J. Bellwood Lectures, which is the largest endowed lectureship at the university.^^-30- le-8-22-00-LAW *Note to media: Justice Scalia will not be granting interviews during his visit.^
