Vandal Fans Encouraged to Buy Tickets for Military Members for Sept. 19 Game

Friday, September 11

The University of Idaho will salute and thank former and current military personnel during the Vandal home football game on Saturday, Sept. 19, for Military Appreciation Day.

Military Appreciation Day activities begin at 11 a.m. on the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center’s north field with a ropes course and children’s activities.

In conjunction with UI and to celebrate the significance of Military Appreciation Day, the Naval, Army and Air Force ROTC Units are hosting a POW/MIA ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Shattuck Amphitheater.
Richard Tierney is the honored guest and speaker. He is a WWII Veteran. Tierney was a B-17 Navigator who was shot down over Germany on Sept. 10, 1944, and then held as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1, Barth Germany until liberated. He currently resides in Lewiston.

Additionally, the Naval ROTC Unit is celebrating its 70th anniversary on the UI campus. The weekend of festivities includes a golf outing, attending the UI/WSU football games, and an anniversary ball. All alumni that have graduated and commissioned from the unit since its inception in 1945 are invited.

Wrapping up the weekend’s events, the Idaho Vandal football team will take on Wofford at 2 p.m. Saturday, where veterans will participate in the coin toss and “Most Vandalized Fan” competition.

The UI ticket office is asking Vandal fans to help provide free game tickets for area active and former military members and their families. Tickets are offered at a discounted price of $12.

Fans can purchase tickets that will be donated to military members at

Fans also can visit the ticket office in the east end of the Kibbie Dome or call (208) 885-6466 to purchase tickets for donation. Season ticket holders can also donate any unused tickets.

Current and former military personnel and their families can pick up their game tickets the week before the game at the Kibbie Dome ticket office or on Sept. 19 at the Chipman & Taylor Ticket Pickup Box Office.

Military Appreciation Day is sponsored by the University of Idaho and Washington State University ROTC units, Vandal Athletics, Operation Education, James F. Amos Veterans Center, University of Idaho President’s Office, the Idaho Army National Guard, Inland Northwest Broadcasting, Pepsi, the Moscow-Pullman Daily News and other community partners.

The ROTC Units would like to express their gratitude to the community for their support and making the events possible.
