Vice President for Research Announces Retirement
Monday, September 14
The University of Idaho’s Vice President for Research and Economic Development John K. “Jack” McIver has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2015-16 fiscal year.
McIver has led UI’s Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) since 2008 and is responsible for overseeing, coordinating and facilitating all UI research activities, including sponsored and internally funded research, center and institute research, interdisciplinary research programs, and research related to the university’s land grant mission.
“I came to the University of Idaho because of the immense potential I saw in the faculty, staff and students, as well as existing programs, to achieve national stature in selected areas. I am proud to have been a part of and contribute to the university as it made progress toward realizing this latent potential,” McIver said. “ I am confident that under the new leadership, the university community will continue to progress toward — and ultimately attain — the leadership positions it has within its reach.”
The vice president for Research and Economic Development oversees the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Research Assurances, the university’s institutes, the proposal development office and the Office of Technology Transfer. The position is the principal point of contact for the university in all research related matters and represents the regional, national and international research interests of the University of Idaho to major research funding agencies and foundations; regional and national research consortia; national laboratories; federal and state agencies; and the private sector.
“Jack has been essential in positioning UI to carry out interdisciplinary work and in growing UI’s reputation as a leading, national research university,” said President Chuck Staben. “We’re extremely grateful for his leadership and service to the university over many years.”
McIver’s leadership positions have spanned more than 15 years — he previously served at the University of New Mexico. McIver also serves on the Idaho Global Entrepreneurial Mission Council, the Instruction, Research, and Student Affairs committee of the Idaho State Board of Education, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies steering committee, the Higher Education Research Council, EPSCoR State Committee, the Idaho Technology Council board, the IDeA Network of Biomedical Research steering committee, the review committee for the National Laser Users Facility, and the Laboratory for Applied Science and Research board.
McIver holds bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and physics, a master’s in engineering and applied sciences, and a doctorate in engineering and applied sciences. The majority of his career was spent as a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of New Mexico. He has spent three years overseas: one year as a National Academy of Sciences exchange scientist in Moscow, Russia, and two years in London on loan to the U.S. Air Force for technology assessment. His research career has focused in experimental and theoretical aspects of nonlinear dynamics.
