Description:
A method was developed for extracting water samples from unsaturated soils under low moisture content and concomitant high tension. A sample collection cell was constructed by enclosing a hydrophylic, cross-linked, dextran xerogel in seamless dialyzer tubing with opening diameters of 48 angstroms. When the cell is placed in contact with a soil, water and its dissolved ions move through the membrane and into the hydrophylic substance. Because the ion exchange capacity of the xerogel is negligible, the water and ions can be replaced by distilled, deionized water and the effluent analyzed. However, chemical analysis of the effluent has revealed that results are not reproducible and that unreasonably high concentrations of some ions often result. Combination trace and infiltration tests have demonstrated that water moves through the loess soils of northern Idaho via discontinuities as well as through intergranual pore spaces. Whether the discontinuities are operative in the infiltration process depends on the surface condition and on the application rate. These must permit a saturated layer to form above the discontinuities before they can begin to conduct water preferentially.
