- Anglophone Protestant missionaries were enthusiastic proponents of implanting modern educational institutions in China, which they thought would uplift of the Chinese in both spiritual and civilizational terms. Historians in both China and the West have tended to approach these schools from either a highly critical perspective, seeing them as obvious parts of the Western imperialist project, or from a more positive angle, as agents of kindly modernization, bringing things like modern medicine to China, for instance. Using West China Union University as an example, this presentation considers whether instead we should see these mission schools as outposts of global modernity, which was changing all corners of the globe in similar though ambivalent ways.
- Biography:
- Jeff Kyong-McClain is a historian of modern East Asia. His research to date has focused on Sino-American educational exchange, and the history of higher education and social scientific academic disciplines in China. After obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 2009, he taught for nine years at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock before coming to the University of Idaho in 2018. At the U of I, he teaches courses in East Asian history and is director of the Idaho Asia Institute. He was born and raised in Minneapolis, and lived for three years in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.
