Description:
How can we leverage the power of stories to enhance science communication efforts? This presentation offers findings of relevance to that question from our National Science Foundation - Advancing Informal STEM Learning pilot and feasibility study, “Stories of Fire: Integrated Learning Through Participatory Narratives,” which explored the efficacy of using personal narratives of wildland fire in informal STEM learning in rural Idaho. The team consists of Kayla Bordelon, Erin James, Jack Kredell and Jennifer Ladino, University of Idaho, and Teresa Cavazos Cohn, University of New Hampshire (and formerly at the University of Idaho.) The team shared two frameworks for working with stories in science communication that have emerged from this work: (1) a participatory storytelling approach that leverages the ecological knowledges embedded in stories of experience that participants bring with them to science exchanges, and (2) a “Narrative Science” approach that draws on narratology and affect studies to help scientists and science communicators develop more nuanced understandings of stories and storytelling processes and to identify the stories and emotions embedded in the scientific process.
