At noon of the first day of battle, six men of the 7th U.S. Infantry brought up the howitzer to fire shots at the Nez Perce camp. After 2 shots Nez Perce warriors captured the howitzer. The Battle of the Big Hole, August 9-10 was the turning point in the Nez Perce War of 1877.
