Postcard of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. | "Big Bang" Eruption, May 18, 1980. After literally blowing over 1400 feet from the summit, Mount St. Helens belches a thick ash and steam cloud that reached 60,000 feet into the atmosphere. The ash could dumped thousands of tons of ash over several states and continued its journey around the globe finding its way back to Washington 2 weeks later.
