Bunro Sakaino Concentration Camp Diary

May 15th (Friday)

I returned to the original mess hall for lunch today. They serve milk with three meals. The chief cook was very kind and took good care of us, but unless you are a doctor, my meals were just served without meat, and sugar was not added. It is the same for all the sick people and not really efficient diet treatment. Moreover, like the environment of the mess hall, the manner of the fellow patients at the table seems to worsen my symptoms. I definitely prefer my original mess hall. Mr. Kodo was the mess hall officer and made arrangements for me. This one is clean, and everyone moves quietly. Everyone here is my friend, and mealtime is my only pleasure here. It gives me such comfort.

I was offered tea in the second tent where Mr. Horagami stays at night. Mr. Harada came to get me, and I ran there. Candies were also offered, and we also had marinated fish [1] that Mr. Harada’s family sent him. It is a rare treat that we had for the first time.

366 I was worried about my stomach problems but took a couple of pieces, and it was a special Edo [2] taste. Seven or eight fellows from Po [3] city joined us. and a tea gathering unexpectedly took place. It was the first pleasant event.

We passed the decision that the representatives from each region meet at the Hawaii headquarters for news reports from now on to share, dictate and report. I was elected to be the representative of the Northwest region. My duty of course is translation of various newspapers delivered here, and we started subscribing to local Oklahoma papers as well.

My stomach problems are coming and going. There is nothing I can do about it as long as a proper diet is not available. It is another type of war.
