- A newspaper article discussing: Admiral Hyman G. Rickover died on July 8, 1986 from natural causes. Rickover is known as the father of the American nuclear navy "He guided the United States to dominance in the naval nuclear propulsion..." Presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter granted him extensions to work past the required retirement age. He served in the navy for 63 years with his career ending abruptly thanks to President Reagan. Even so, Rickover's influence remained strong, particularly at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), where much of the Navy’s nuclear training took place.
