Postcard of the bastion at Fort Vancouver in Vancouver, Washington. | The original Bastion was built by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1845. It was armed with eight 3-pounder cannons. The cannons were used to salute English ships as they approached Fort Vancouver. The Bastion was also a deterrent to possible American attacks on the Fort. The Bastion was destroyed by fire in 1866 and reconstructed by the National Park Service in 1973 on its original location.
