After breakfast, Mr. Kinzaburo Oshima from Hawaii (from Nagano prefecture, 52 years old) climbed over the gate on the south east corner, went through the first barbed wire fence, ran up on the second wire fence and attempted to escape. He was shot to death by a soldier. He was ordered to stop several times, heard the warnings but kept running at a faster pace.

He was instantly killed with two shots fired at him when he climbed the wire fence. This incident gave all the interned fellow Japanese a tremendous shock. Upon this unusual news, all the fellow Japanese got together on the road on the south side. The administration deployed additional soldiers under heavy guard with the safety cover off on the machine guns, and it was a strange site for us.
The slaughtered man was going through some mental health issues several days ago, and we heard he could have been somewhat dangerous. He was a happy father with a wife and many children in Hawaii and also financially successful with a comfortable life. We heard that he was often talking about his family, experiencing mental breakdown and lost his sanity.
