I woke up with cold air coming through the cracks and started a fire in the stove. Startling lightning flashed the barracks just then, and it was like someone turned on a flashlight aiming at me from a close distance. I heard faraway rumbling, and a tremendous thunder broke off, shaking the entire building right after. It started to pour at the same time, and the wind brought extreme cold. I looked at the clock, and it was two in the morning. I could not stay awake as it was so early in the morning and went back to bed. It is hard to have the bathroom so far away when it is this cold. There is not a huge difference from the winter weather in Portland even though it is pretty cold here, but what makes a difference is a lack of protection against the cold weather. It is hard to endure.
Mr. Sakimura reported that bank statements with the remaining balance of the funds held by the authority are to be distributed to each of us starting February 1st. We will be allowed to withdraw up to 30 dollars per month. Marshall visited and made an official announcement today to us internees today.
484 The camp administration will issue such balance sheets, and all the funds will be transferred to the camp in cash.
