I saw two elderly guys seemingly over age 60, one from California and the other from the mid mountain area, holding a discussion about one chocolate bar. The smaller old man saw a chocolate bar in one hand of the other and asked, “Is that a candy? Did you just buy it?”
“No, someone just gave it to me.”
“What is it?”
“Chocolate”
“It is candy”
It went on. The one who was questioning was deeply interested and serious. It is just like a child finding his friend with a candy bar in his hand and feeling jealous. I found it both funny and pitiful. They are at the age to be grandparents living their lives without freedom in detention. I was hit by a sense of sadness and sorrow when I overheard their conversation. This paints a picture of how the internees are feeling, and it is hard to witness.

According to some reports, Prime Minister Tojo made a public announcement to express his sympathy toward Japanese citizens living in the U.S. and urged us to remain patient as Japan will defeat Great Britain and the U.S. by the end of this year.
Shrimp soup was served for lunch, and it was delicious. I have been having digestive problems for the last several days, but it is not severe pain that would make me groan.
