Mr. Asakichi Tanbara received a letter from his wife yesterday. According to it, his children in the relocation center [1] are extremely concerned about their father detained as an internee in the camp. They eagerly wait for a letter from their father every day and get deeply disappointed when they do not see one in the mailbox. Their mother cannot help shedding tears. The children also wish to live together no matter what it takes and realize their dream to have their mother live with their father. The letter reveals their strong love and respect toward the parents, stating that they would like to follow their parents and to share hardship and happiness together. The children wish to take care of the parents and are willing to pay sacrifice to do so, and the parents encourage them to endure for now for their future. They reluctantly decided to live separately from each other. People like Mr. Tanbara’s children are able to figure out what is currently taking place in the U.S, and will not make wrong decisions.
It is no use to say children of Japanese are American citizens. No one listens to it. It must be impossible to regain the status we had no matter how loudly Japanese and Japanese Americans protest as a minority role after the war. We need to break ourselves away. This is not time to stay low at a fork of our lives.
