Reference Services

The library can be a confusing place. If you ever need help figuring out how to best use our many resources, feel free to contact our reference librarians by any of the means above. You can also meet a librarian in person by making an appointment or by visiting the reference desk, located on the first floor of the library.

Below are some regularly used resource pages:

Off-Campus Access

Patrons are able to gain off-campus access to almost all of the library's online resources by using their University Net ID and Password.

We also provide an off-campus tool, called a "bookmarklet", which lets you log-in to online databases, magazines, and journals with the push of a button.

Subject Liaisons

Each UI College has a librarian assigned as a subject liaison. Liaisons perform several functions, including teaching subject-specific classes, working with faculty to create research assignments, conducting one-on-one research sessions, and selecting and purchasing materials for the library.

Research Assistance Program

Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff can schedule an appointment with a librarian for assistance in finding articles, books, websites and other information for research papers and projects, creating effective research strategies, and managing citations.

Faculty can also get help with integrating information resources into specific courses, and designing effective library-based course assignments. If you have questions, please contact Rochelle Smith, 208-885-7850 or

Reference Desk

Located on the library's first floor, this is where you can ask general and specific questions about using the library and conducting research.
