Description

The CDIL Metadata Fellowship Program provides a stipend for a student currently enrolled in a university undergraduate or graduate program to work on developing descriptive metadata for a new or existing digital collection. The experience will offer a fellow first-hand experience with foundational skills in digital humanities, preparing them to engaging with self-directed projects in the future.

Call for Applications

The Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning invites undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in any University of Idaho program to work with CDIL staff to create compliant metadata to describe and make accessible a collection of approximately 750 newspaper articles authored by Idaho journalist and U of I alum Ben J. Plastino. The fellow will learn to use AI to assist with the creation of succinct descriptions of each article, and will then apply critical reasoning to appropriately tag the article with a controlled vocabulary.

Fellows will be expected to work at the CDIL or virtually while creating metadata that complies with the standards set forth by their supervisor. At the conclusion of the project, the fellow will reflect on their experience in a blog post that will be shared on the Library’s Harvester platform.

This fellowship offers $2,000 to support the student fellow as they complete the metadata project over the course of the Fall 2025 semester. The stipend is supported by the family of Ben J. Plastino.

About Ben J. Plastino Papers

The Ben J. Plastino papers span the years 1947-1998 and include nearly 1,000 political articles and opinion papers written by Plastino while he was Executive Editor and Political Editor of the Idaho Falls newspaper, The Post Register. Additionally, the collection includes letters from elected officials and other political leaders written to Plastino, photographs taken by Plastino, and copies of the books Coming of Age: Idaho Falls and the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and The Eastern Idaho Flood Story. The articles and opinion pieces are being described in order to create a comprehensive digital collection that will allow users to explore the Plastino’s career and how Idaho’s political landscape changed over the latter-20th century.
